MONROE - Senior Charlie Kind recalls the message every time before tip-off.
"One of the things we write down on the white board before every game is to play four quarters," said Kind, who scored 17 points and had seven rebounds to lead Monroe to a 73-38 thumping of Janesville Parker Tuesday. "We beat them in all four quarters. We were able to get our scout guys in and they really appreciate that. It's really good for our team to get those guys out there.
"It's really big for our team. I think we were all really down from our loss to MG. I think this game helped us get our confidence."
Monroe (2-4, 1-2 Badger South) outscored the Vikings 27-5 in the first quarter. Kind hit two jumpers to spark the surge. The Vikings played without 6 foot-2 leading scorer J.J. Scott. Scott, who averages 17.7 points per game and scored 29 to beat Middleton, missed the game.
"They (Janesville Parker) were missing their best player," Monroe coach Pat Murphy said. "When you have a team and they are missing their best guy it throws everything out of whack. Our team is capable of games like this. We have to make sure our defense and rebounding stays solid."
The Vikings (2-5) were out of sync from the opening tip. Monroe junior Kevin Noriega came up with a steal and threw an outlet pass to senior Jake Hirsbrunner who scored on a layup and was fouled. He converted the conventional three-point play by hitting the free throw to give the Cheesemakers a 22-5 lead with 2 minutes, 5 seconds left in the first quarter. Freshman Alex Tordoff capped the run knocking down a 3-pointer at the end of the first quarter to give the Cheesemakers a 22-point lead.
Monroe senior Kylan Helmeid drilled a 3-pointer early in the second quarter to give the Cheesemakers a 30-5 lead. Helmeid knocked down a fadeaway jumper before the buzzer to give the Cheesemakers a 43-14 lead at the half. Hirsbrunner finished with 15 points and Helmeid added 11 points.
"It feels a lot better than any of our other games," Hirsbrunner said. "It was great that we were able to get out on top and stick it to them and build some confidence."
The Vikings shot 16 percent in the first half (4-for-25), but were able to grab 13 offensive rebounds. The Cheesemakers shot 55.5 percent in the first half and finished at 52.3 percent (22-for-42).
"That is a boatload and way too many," Murphy said of the offensive rebounds the Vikings had in the first half. "The one thing we have to do is limit teams to one shot. That is what killed us at MG."
The Cheesemakers didn't let up in the second half with a 22-4 run. Monroe junior Jacob Flannery scored on a layup late in the third quarter to give the Cheesemakers a 63-18 lead. The 45-point lead was the largest for the Cheesemakers.
"I'm proud of how they (Cheesemakers) defended," Murphy said. "They were really unselfish on offense. This is one game. We have to continue to get better."
The Cheesemakers had 10 players score. Senior Eric Vale scored seven points and Tordoff and senior Alex Hendrickson each chipped in five. It's the second straight game Hendrickson has started.
"We had guys coming off the bench and showing that they can score," Hirsbrunner said. "We may have a little more depth than we thought we had. Other guys stepped up."
Monroe will host Milton in a Badger South Conference game at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
"I think this will definitely give us some momentum going into Friday," Kind said. "I know we want to get a win going into Christmas."
