MOUNT HOREB - Monroe volleyball coach Danya Ward had high expectations for the Mount Horeb Invitational on Saturday.
The Cheesemakers finished 2-3 and took fourth place at the Mount Horeb Invite.
The Cheesemakers are still working on closing out tight matches. "I feel like we could have been a contender for first or second place," Ward said. "It's a little disappointing to come in fourth. I feel like we could have performed better."
Delavan Darien defeated Monroe 25-17, 23-25, 15-12 and the Cheesemakers also lost a three-set match to Mount Horeb 25-18, 23-25, 8-15. The Cheesemakers beat Evansville 25-19, 25-19, dispatched Columbus in three sets 25-18, 23-25, 15-5 and lost to Lancaster 6-25, 22-25.
Monroe played without senior outside hitter Becca Armstrong who had a family obligation, Ward said.
Monroe junior Taylor Barrett had 21 kills and 13 blocks in the invite. Senior Heather Barta racked up 36 assists and had nine digs. Senior Ashley Curtis had a team-high 20 digs. Junior Kayla Updike had 26 assists and junior Whitney Disch had a team-high 11 aces. Junior Kirsten Vetterli added 12 blocks and 10 aces.
The Cheesemakers had a lead over the Vikings in the second game, but couldn't hang on.
"We came out strong in the first two games against Delavan and Mount Horeb," Ward said. "We definitely should have had Mount Horeb. We only needed three points in the second game. We couldn't close it out. We let them take over."
