Cards, Warriors sprint at BDNI

BELOIT - Black Hawk and Brodhead-Juda participated in Friday's 10-team Beloit Daily News Invitational.

On the girls side, both Black Hawk and Brodhead-Juda had three champions.

Annie Hamel won the 100-meter high hurdles for the Cardinals, finishing with a time of 17.49 seconds. Teammate Rachel Nolte won the pole vault with a mark of 8 feet and Heather Clankie destroyed the discus field, tossing to a mark of 118 feet, 7 inches. The next closet competitor, Justine Valliant of Beloit Memorial, had a score of 91-5.

Black Hawk's Katie Place won both the long jump (15-3) and the triple jump (31-9 3/4). Cassie Jorgenson took top honors in the shot put (32-6), nearly a foot ahead of Clankie (31-07).

Brodhead-Juda's Mariah Ahrens finished second in the high jump (4-8), and the Cardinals' 1,600-meter relay team finished second with a time of 4 minutes, 35.4 seconds.

Melissa Wellnitz finished second in the 800 (2:37.0) and the Warriors' 800 relay team also finished as runner-up with a time of 1:56.9.

On the boys side, Brodhead-Juda's Mitch Wiesenberg won the pole vault with a mark of 12 feet. Two relay teams took second for the Cardinals, the 400 (47.78) and the 800 (1:39.4).

Black Hawk's Cody Foster came in second place in the 300 hurdles (44.40 seconds).
