BRODHEAD - With a 15-point second half lead, the Brodhead girls basketball team was in prime position to roll past Dodgeville.
However, Dodgeville had different ideas outscoring the Cardinals 21-12 in the fourth quarter. Brodhead senior Carly Mohns, a University of Iowa recruit, fouled out with 1 minute 30 seconds to go, but the Cardinals hung on for a 56-50 non-conference win over Dodgeville.
"This game will benefit us because we got tested and we were able to respond and hit some free throws down the stretch," Brodhead coach Brad Pickett said. "Any time you can get tested in a non-conference game and come out with a win it benefits your team."
Brodhead (5-0, 3-0 Rock Valley South) outscored the Dodgers 16-2 in the third quarter to build a 15-point lead. Brodhead sophomore Amber Pickel scored a team-high 13 points. Sophomore Kylie Moe had 12 points and Mohns added 10. Senior Rachel Heller scored nine points.
"We didn't do a good job of handling the pressure in the fourth quarter," Pickett said. "Dodgeville I think is a very good team. They are picked to win their conference. For us to get a win with Carly on the bench, it's a great benefit."

NEW GLARUS - The New Glarus girls basketball team was at its best in transition, rolling to a 63-51 win over Evansville in a non-conference game Monday.
New Glarus (3-4) outscored the Blue Devils 20-6 in the second quarter to build a 15-point lead at the half.
New Glarus sophomore Vanessa Narveson scored a game-high 19 points and senior Courtney Feller added 17. It marks the second straight win for the Glarner Knights.
"We got some defensive stops and pushed the ball," New Glarus coach Megan Scheele said of the second quarter run. "We got on the fastbreak and attacked the basket. We found some gaps and got to the basket."
New Glarus seniors Sierra Watrud and Mandi Sargent each added eight points. With the win, the Knights avenged a loss to the Blue Devils from last year. It's the start of a stretch of three games in six days for the Knights.
"It will give us a boost of confidence," Scheele said. "Hopefully, it will jump-start our week off and we can keep it going and get two more wins."
