VERONA - Thanks to a late two-point conversation, the 4th Grade Blaze won 8-7 on the road against Verona. Strong play on both sides of the ball included limited turnovers, good assignment defense and sound tackling, according to coaches.
Player confidence is also in increasing, as you can see players flying to the ball instead of playing tentative and second guessing, they said.
5th Grade Red
The Fifth Grade Red fell to the undefeated Deforest Black 20-18.
The Blaze offense cranked out 198 total yards and three touchdowns on a Deforest team that had previously allowed just one touchdown all year, while the defense recovered two fumbles leading to two scores.
The team played with a lot of heart and never quit, coaches said, even when their back was against the wall.
Down by 20 points in the third quarter, the Blaze fought back to have a chance to tie
5th Grade White
The Fifth Grade White shut out the Sun Prairie Gold 14-0 on Saturday.
The defense - led by Darien Hargrove, Deion Hargrove, Julian Gruber, Jared Dillon, Payton Sawdey, Tim Beckman, Nick Bansley, Logan Leuzinger and Connor Allen - allowed just 39 yards of total offense. The defensive line also played a big part, with Henry Hanson and Dustin Gough rotating in throughout.
The offensive line of Dayne Lawinger, Cael Losenegger, Ben Figi, the Hargrove Twins and Gruber anchored an offense that amassed 278 yards of total offense.
Scoring opened on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Sawdey to Bansley - a play set up by a 44-yard run by Dylan Fahrney. The only other score in the game came late in the second quarter, a 47-yard scamper by Bansley.
Bansley led the way with 148 yards rushing on 13 carries to go along with two receptions for 14 yards. Fahrney added 62 rushing yards on three carries. Sawdey was 2-2 passing for 14 yards and a touchdown.
Monroe hosts Pec-Argyle Saturday at 11:30 am.
6th Grade Red
The Sixth Grade Red played two games this past week, falling to St. Francis 12-7 on Tuesday, Sept. 25 and losing 37-6 to the Southside Raiders Saturday.
Against St. Francis, Colby Argall, Wade Sweeney, Evan Thompson and Jacob Amacher combined for 182 rushing yards. Argall scored the only TD and also converted the extra point.
The Blaze were tough on defense, coaches said, but St. Francis broke two long plays right before halftime and another in the third quarter. Sweeney led with nine tackles and a fumble recovery, and Blumer record five tackles and an interception.
On Saturday, the Blaze came out on the wrong end of a lopsided loss to a bigger, faster Southside team. Although they had a tough game, they all showed that they never give up, coaches said.
Argall, Sweeney and Thompson rushed for a total of 104 combined rushing yards. In the fourth quarter, the Blaze drove down and scored on a 1-yard run by Sweeney.
On defense, Sweeney and King both led the team with five tackles, and Seth Ballard and Lovelace each added three tackles.
Despite having the tough week, the Blaze kept their heads high, coaches said.
They take on Sun Prairie Saturday.
6th Grade White
The Sixth Grade White team defeated the visiting Warner Park Purple team by a score of 27-0.
The Blaze controlled the line of scrimmage early, scoring all of their points in the first half. Jordan Montgomery scored three times - on a 56-yard run, a 29-yard reverse and a 37-yard pass play. Tanner Aebly also collected his first career score on a 30-yard pass play. Cole Lincicum, Lucas Quinn, and Mitchell Quinn all converted extra points.
The Blaze ran for 175 yards on 25 carries and completed two of three passes for 67 yards and two touchdowns.
Warner Purple ran for 12 yards on 23 carries and completed two of four passes for 15 yards.
The win brings the Blaze's record to 2-1-1. They will host the Verona White 10 a.m. Saturday at the YMCA field.
7th Grade
The Seventh Grade Blaze came away with a 31-0 win over Pec-Argyle Saturday, improving their record to 4-0.
In the first half, Nick Quinn scored two touchdowns - one rushing and one receiving - behind blocking from Joe Hughes, Brady Buol, Joe Crubaugh, Sam Kind and Mitchell Bartelt.
Quarterback Dylan Scace connected with Quinn for 35 yards on the passing touchdown. Dempzy Foley made one out of the two PATs, and he also scored the team's first field goal.
Relentless pressure by the defensive line led to two interceptions by Brayden Zettle.
In the second quarter, Zettle made his presence felt on offense, taking a handoff 30 yards for a touchdown. Foley again added the PAT, putting the Blaze up 25-0.
Then with only five minutes left in the fourth quarter, Foley ran for a 25-yard touchdown thanks in big part to a key block by Travis Wolf.
The team hosts Mt. Horeb this week.
8th Grade
The Eighth Grade Blaze defeated Belleville 38-16 Saturday.
Monroe opened the game with a 75-yard kickoff return by Alex Tordoff. On the second series, Tordoff took a pass from Tyler Elmer and rumbled 34 yards for a touchdown.
Elmer added a 46-yard run for a touchdown later in the first quarter, to give the Blaze a 24-0 lead. Later in the game, Ryne Miller scored on a 20-yard run, and Cole Murray capped the scoring with a 44-yard touchdown run. Miller also stayed perfect for the season converting PATs, making all five of his attempts Saturday.
Monroe racked up 223 yards of offense.
Belleville had a 70-yard kickoff return in third quarter and also added a 63-yard touchdown run.
Monroe travels to Wisconsin Heights next week.
