SOUTH WAYNE - Black Hawk junior Conner Meyer scored a game-high 27 points to power the Warriors to a 69-46 win over Shullsburg Saturday.
Black Hawk (6-3, 3-2 Six Rivers East) jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first half. Meyer scored 9 points during the first half run.
"When we get the ball in to Conner, we are able to set up our press, and that was the key to the game," Black Hawk coach Charlie Anderson said. "Our press got us a couple of steals, and we were able to score a lot of points in a short amount of time."
Black Hawk senior Jared Knapp added 13 points, and senior C.J. Leuzinger chipped in 12 points.
Coming off a WIAA Division 7 state runner-up finish in football, the Warriors lost their first two conference games in basketball to Pecatonica and Barneveld. There is still half a season left in the conference. Pecatonica still plays Barneveld twice, and Black Hawk will face both Pecatonica and Barneveld one more time.
"We had a slow start to our season," Anderson said. "All we can do is control what we can control. We just want to keep getting better. Hopefully, things work out in our favor. Hopefully, by the end of the year, we are in the mix."
Black Hawk hosts Belmont Thursday and then plays Don Bosco Catholic, Iowa, which is ranked No. 7 in the Iowa Class 1A poll, in the Wendy's American Trust Classic Saturday at Loras College in Dubuque.
"That will be a really good test for us to see how much we have improved from the beginning of the year," Anderson said.
