DUBUQUE, IOWA - The Black Hawk girls basketball team faced their biggest test yet and behind sophomore Hannah Butler's 17 points the Warriors rolled in the second half to a 55-37 win over two-time Iowa state champion Springville Saturday at Loras College.
Black Hawk (8-0, 3-0 Six Rivers East) led by just one point at the half, 25-24. The Warriors outscored Springville 30-13 in the second half. Springville features two 6-foot players.
"In the first half, we didn't do a good job of getting the ball inside as much," Black Hawk coach Mike Flanagan said. "In the second half, we did a much better job of getting the ball in the high post to distort their 2-3 zone and we hit our shots. I thought our defensive pressure wore them down over the course of the second half."
It is the closest game Black Hawk has played this season.
We haven't been in a game like that all year," Flanagan said. "We weren't in a game like that last year until the tournament. We tried to schedule up this year. This is one of the games we knew would definitely be a challenge. I think it was a good learning experience for us. We really need to stay persistent when we face the better teams."
Black Hawk freshman Bailey Butler added 12 points and sophomore Natalie Leuzinger had 11 points. Springville's 6-foot post player Mikayla Nachazel scored a team-high 14 points.
New Glarus 72, Mauston 34
WISCONSIN DELLS - New Glarus junior Lexi Krause scored a game-high 21 points to lead Glarner Knights to a rout of Mauston in a nonconference game at JustAGame Fieldhouse.
New Glarus jumped out to a 29-19 lead at the break. The Knights put the game away outscoring Mauston 43-15 in the second half.
