SOUTH WAYNE - Black Hawk got a signature win knocking off seventh ranked Cassville 66-44 on Saturday.
Cassville was playing without Ty Kartman who missed the game due to injury. Kartman averages 24.9 points per game.
"He's a great player," Black Hawk coach Corey Manlick said. "He would have made a difference and the game would have been closer."
Black Hawk (11-1, 6-1 Six Rivers East) has won seven straight games including wins over Barneveld and Cassville.
"It's a great win for our program," Manlick said. "I'm O.K. with flying under the radar."
The Warriors jumped out to a 13-9 lead in the first quarter and led by seven points at the half.
"I like how the team responded when we got into foul trouble," Manlick said.
Black Hawk senior Cory Rupnow and junior Seth Butler each scored 13 points. Sophomore Heath Butler added 11 points.
Monticello 54, Argyle 31
MONTICELLO - The Ponies welcomed back leading scorer Bryce Klitzke and Argyle had to deal with an injury of its own Saturday.
Klitzke, a senior, averaging 19 points per game, scored 12 points in his first game back from an injury. Argyle freshman Riley Ostby was injured in warm-ups and didn't play.
Monticello sophomore Ben May scored a game-high 18 points and junior Lucas Marty and senior Jesse Halvorsen each added 10.
"We played pretty well without him," Monticello coach Mark Olson said of Klitzke. "Now that he is back, he will make us a better team."
Monticello (14-1, 6-1 Six Rivers East) went on a 19-2 run that began at the end of the first quarter and spanned into the second. The fourth ranked Ponies put the game away with a 10-0 spurt to start the third quarter to take a 41-15 lead.
Argyle freshman Kyle Emberson scored a team-high nine points and Pablo Vives added eight.
Monticello enters a key stretch of games that could determine the conference champion. The Ponies host Albany on Tuesday and then play at Black Hawk Thursday, Jan. 31 before a hosting Barneveld Tuesday, Feb. 5.
"There is not much I have to say," Olson said about keeping the Ponies focused on Albany with two big conference games coming up. "They know every game in conference is important. We have a lot of respect for all the teams in the conference."
Barneveld 69, Juda 33
JUDA - Barneveld kept pace with Monticello and Black Hawk by rolling to a win over Juda.
Barneveld (9-5, 6-1) jumped out to a 21-11 first quarter lead and led by 18 at the half. The Eagles outscored the Panthers 26-5 in the third quarter. With the loss, Juda drops to 4-10, 2-5.
Juda senior Cole Bauman scored a team-high 12 points and senior Matt Trotter added nine.
Potosi 53, Albany 39
POTOSI - The Chieftains jumped out to a first-quarter lead and never looked back en route to winning a Six Rivers crossover game against the Comets Saturday.
Potosi outscored Albany 18-10 in the first quarter and the Chieftains led by 11 points at the half.
Albany junior Isaiah Shell scored 19 points to lead the Comets.
Columbus 77, New Glarus 60
NEW GLARUS - Columbus got off to a hot offensive start and cruised to a win over the Glarner Knights Saturday.
Columbus jumped out to a 20-7 first quarter lead and led by 25 points at the half.
"They jumped on us early and we never recovered," New Glarus coach Travis Sysko said.
New Glarus freshman Landon Zimmerman scored a team-high 22 points. Senior Spencer Jones added 12 points and junior Patrick Elzen chipped in 11.
"Defensively, we have to get better," Sysko said. "It's not from a lack of effort. We just have to execute better."
New Glarus (4-11, 2-2 Capitol South) will host Waterloo on Tuesday.
"I think the kids will bounce back on Tuesday," Sysko said.
