JANESVILLE - Knowing they'd run into some lovely weather for tennis at Janesville Craig High School, the Cheesemakers brought their brooms for Thursday's non-conference match.
Monroe swept Craig, 7-0, to move to 2-1 on the young season.
"It turned out to be a nice weather night and we played well overall," Monroe coach Jim Bartholf said.
The No. 1 doubles pairing of Matt Turek and Levi Jannsens survived a 7-5 barnburner with the strong duo of Chris Matteson and Jau Fenton before running away with the second set, 6-1.
Nick Hendrickson and Trevor Arn won a hardfought 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, decision in No. 3 play over Ken Durfee and Stewart Winter. The steady pairing of Jim Kundert and Mark Hoesly won their No. 2 match over David Jacowski and Bryan Steven, 6-4, 6-3.
Carson root doubled his career varsity win total by coasting to a 6-1, 6-1, No. 1 victory over Ben Timblin. None of the Cheesemakers' singles players dropped sets as No. 2 Matt Le defeated Steve Mickelson, 6-3, 6-3; Artem Bralgin routed Ben Tanko, 6-1, 6-1, in No. 3 play; and No. 4 Dan Becker survived Doug Johnson's rally, 6-1, 7-6.
If the rain holds off, Monroe hosts Waunakee today in, appropriately, a rain makeup.
Monroe's junior-varsity team won, 9-1 as Pat Gellings, Garrett Tschanz, Eric Knudtson, Jakob Baertschi and Garrett Grinnell took their singles matches. Eric Ganshert and Joe Ganshert, Blake Antos and Eric Radke, Grinnell and Mike Kohn, and Baertschi and Radke were the winning doubles pairings.
