MONROE - Senior Tyler Johnson, freshman Travis Edmunds and senior Jacob Ritschards each scored two goals to power the Monroe boys hockey co-op team to a 10-5 nonconference win over Viroqua on Saturday.
Edmunds scored his first goal on an assist from Ritschards at the 9-minute, 9-second mark in the first period to tie the game at 1. Avalanche freshman Jared Dillon of Monroe scored a go-ahead goal on an assist by Johnson to give Monroe a 2-1 lead at 2:35. Viroqua came back to tie the game at 2 at the end of the first period.
Johnson added four assists. The Avalanche (3-17) broke the game open with four goals in the second period and four goals in the third period. Edmunds scored a game-tying power-play goal on a pass from Ritschards at 11:59 in the second period to tie the game at 3. About two minutes later, Ritschards scored a go-ahead goal on an assist from Johnson to give the Avalanche a 4-3 lead.
The Avalanche's Jared Cline and Johnson added power-play goals to give the Avalanche an insurmountable 6-3 lead.
After Viroqua cut the Avalnache's lead to 6-5 in the third period, Monroe answered. The Avalanche's Cade Martin of Belleville scored a goal on a pass from Colton O'Connor of Orangeville to extend the lead to 7-5. Ritschards scored a short-handed goal and Johnson had a power-play goal to give the Avalanche a 9-5 lead. The final goal for the Avalanche came from Payton Stauffacher on an assist from Johnson.
The Avalanche outshot Viroqua 67-32. Monroe goalie Dan Guilliams had 27 saves.
Monroe will play its final Badger South Conference game at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Monona Grove. The Avalanche will then play a nonconference game at Madison La Follette Thursday before hosting Greendale in the regular season finale at 5 p.m. Saturday.
