MADISON - For the second time this season, the Monroe Avalanche skated to a win against Madison La Follette. The Avalanche knocked off La Follette 5-0 Thursday night.

"The defense played an excellent game," Avalanche coach Nate Brown said. "They held their zone very well. When the defense can control the puck like they did that will win games."

Gus Werhane scored two goals and Jarrett Warden had two assists to lead the Avalanche (2-11). Brett Jones scored the first goal for the Avalanche on an assist from T.J. Parrent at 5 minutes, 37 seconds in the first period. The Avalanche dominated the game out-shooting La Follette 60-13.

The Avalanche scored twice in the second period. Alex Landen scored a goal on an assist by Jake Trickel at 5:02 in the second period. About 11 minutes later, Parrent scored a goal on an assist from Johnny Kallgren to give the Avalanche a commanding 3-0 lead.

Brown said communication was the key.

"They played a nice game of hockey," he said. "They played really well. Everyone was out there working together. When they work hard in practice it falls into place in games."

Werhane scored both of his goals in the third period on assists from Warden. Werhane has scored four goals in his last two games.

The Avalanche will have a quick turnaround as they host Baraboo-Reedsburg in a Badger Conference game at 7 p.m. at SLICE.

"The momentum from this week will carry over to tonight," Brown said.
