Avalanche go 1-1-1 over the weekend

MONROE - The Monroe Avalanche U18 varsity hockey team played three home games over the weekend.

On Friday evening, the team hosted 2009 state champion Kenosha Komets and lost 2-1.

Matt Bush scored Monroe's only goal with assists from Drew Geissbuhler and Luke Newcomer. Sean Winters made 27 saves in goal for the Avalanche.

On Saturday, Monroe hosted back-to-back games with the Leaf Hockey Club from West Dundee, Ill.

The first game resulted in a 1-1 tie with Jon Becker getting Monroe's lone goal, assisted by Jordan Steurer. Sean Winters had 21 saves during the opener.

In the second game of the day Monroe broke out of its scoring slump with three goals in second period for a 3-0 lead and held on to win 4-2.

Brandon Mortimer had two goals. Bush and Taylor Riese added one each. Ron Draves had three assists along with one each by Geissbuhler and Riese. Sean Winters notched 33 saves for the win.

Monroe hosts the Chicago Hawks this Saturday at SLICE. Game times are 1:30 and 5 p.m.
