OREGON - Monroe junior Natalie Dillon pitched a four-hitter to lead the Cheesemakers to a 5-1 win over Oregon Thursday.
Monroe (7-2, 6-0 Badger South) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after scoring three runs with two outs in the first inning. Dillon singled to left and advanced to second base on an error. Monroe junior Kylea Ambrose then delivered an RBI triple. Junior teammate Hannah Vetterli came through with an RBI single to score Ambrose. Sophomore Carly Upmann reached on an error on a fly ball to right field and Vetterli scored to give the Cheesemakers a 3-0 lead.
"That was huge," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said. "Oregon has really been playing well and helped us by beating Fort Atkinson. We got big hits from Ambrose and Vetterli."
The Cheesemakers now have a two-game lead in the conference.
"We are sitting in a really nice position, but we still have some work to do," Buvid said.
Monroe senior Kari Jordan, Ambrose and Vetterli each went 2-for-4 to lead the Cheesemakers. The Cheesemakers tacked on two runs in the third. Jordan doubled and Ambrose reached on an infield single. Vetterli then singled to left to load the bases. Upmann walked to bring in a run and Cassidy Pivonka had an RBI single to give the Cheesemakers the 5-1 lead.
Dillon was sharp on the mound. She struck out two and walked just one.
"She threw some better changeups at times," Buvid said. "She kept the ball down and got a lot of groundouts. It's a step in the right direction. We know she is capable of more. We played very well defensively."
