Albany stuns Barneveld; Pec tops Black Hawk

BARNEVELD - The Albany Comets built a 6-1 lead in the fourth inning, then held on for 6-5 victory over the Barneveld in the Six Rivers East Conference finale for both teams Thursday.

Sophomore Kaylee Johnson went 2-for-3 while sophomore pitcher Katie Krupke scattered nine hits over seven innings with a pair of walks and three strikeouts to get the win for the Comets (3-9, 3-7 Six Rivers East).

"Katie showed good control with her pitches," Albany head coach Connie Wunschel said. "Every little thing was working and going our way. I'm so proud of them."

Barneveld finished the regular season in second place behind Juda in the Six Rivers East with a 7-3 record, 11-8 overall.

Boscobel 14, Darlington 2

DARLINGTON - The Darlington Redbirds finished their SWAL Conference regular season winless after a 14-2 loss to the Boscobel Bulldogs in five innings Thursday.

The Bulldogs scored five runs in the fourth inning and six runs in the fifth to pull away from the Redbirds.

Darlington (3-16, 0-13 SWAL) will travel to undefeated Lancaster Thursday for the first round of the WIAA Division 3 playoffs.

Pecatonica 10, Black Hawk 1

GRATIOT - The Pecatonica softball team's offense broke out Thursday and the Vikings handed Black Hawk a 10-1 loss.

Pecatonica (7-8, 5-5 Six Rivers East) broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning. Pecatonica junior Ellie Gifford went 3-for-4 with a double to lead the Vikings. Michelle Francois went 2-for-3 and Amanda Schoepp was 2-for-4 with a double.

Pecatonica senior Kaci Cassidy went the distance and gave up one run on eight hits. She struck out seven and walked two.

The Warriors had three players with multi-hit games including Jordan Rupnow (2-for-3), Riley Argall (2-for-3) and Melissa Wellnitz (2-for-4).

Black Hawk's Kayla Melland pitched a complete game and she gave up six earned runs on eight hits. She walked five, hit three and struck out four.

Brodhead 5, Orfordville Parkview 4

ORFORDVILLE - The Cardinals scored four runs in the first and were able to hang on to the Rock Valley South win.

Brodhead junior Erika Stampfli pitched a complete game and gave up four earned runs on five hits. She struck out 11 and walked four.

Juda 6, Monticello 0

JUDA - Sophomore Amber Ramos drove in two runs with a double in the third inning and shut down Monticello on just two hits as the Panthers topped the Ponies 6-0 Thursday.

Sophomore Katlyn DeVoe went 2-for-4 and led off the first inning with a triple and later scored to give Ramos and the Panthers all the runs they needed. Ramos walked two, hit two batters and struck out eight. Becky Nelson allowed seven hits over six innings with four walks and five strikeouts for Monticello (5-7, 3-6 Six Rivers East).

Juda improved to 13-5 overall and 11-1 in the Six Rivers East and will be the No. 1 seed in the Division 4 regional. They will host Kenosha Christian Life in a non-conference game Tuesday. Monticello will travel to Pecatonica Thursday in a Division 4 quarterfinal with the winner facing Juda, June 1.

Southwestern 10, Argyle 2

HAZEL GREEN - The Southwestern Wildcats scored four runs in the first inning and six more in the second inning to roll past the Argyle Orioles, 10-2, in a non-conference game Thursday.

Junior Kelsey Bartels gave up 10 hits while walking two and striking out six. The Orioles managed just three hits of Southwestern's Stacy Kaiser. Argyle (9-6, 7-4 Six Rivers East) will host Albany Thursday in a WIAA Division 4 regional quarterfinal.
