ALBANY - The Albany boys cross country team had four runners in the top 15 and won the Baertschi Invitational small-school division race Saturday.
The Comets edged Poynette for the team title 58-62. Albany senior Tyler Dahl finished third with a time of 17 minutes, 32.1 seconds. Fellow senior Josh Little took eighth (18:08.4), freshman Josh Dahl was 12th (18:19.2), and junior Isaac Halverson placed 13th (18:22.4). Junior teammate Connor Trow rounded out the top five for the Comets by finishing 22nd (18:59).
The Monroe cross country teams didn't compete in the varsity races. The Cheesemakers rested their top nine boys and top seven girls in anticipation of the Badger South Conference meet. The Cheesemakers only ran in the junior varsity races Saturday.
"With conference coming we wanted to do what is best for everyone on our team," Monroe coach Dave Hirsbrunner said.
New Glarus-Monticello finished fifth (135) in the boys small-school division and Pecatonica-Argyle (411) was last in the 14-team race.
New Glarus-Monticello junior Kyle Fredrickson took ninth (18:11.4), and senior Max Cruse was 14th (18:25.8). Junior teammate Christian Arnett took 32nd (19:18.2) and senior Ben Jacobson was 39th (19:51.7). Junior Andrew Newberry took 41st (19:52.5).
Pecatonica-Argyle had two runners in the top 80. Freshman Cade Bush finished 78th (22:09.9), and junior Tristan Waage took 80th (22:25.3).
In the large-school race, Monroe Grove captured the title, edging Stoughton 61-63. Brodhead-Juda finished sixth (194) out of 10 teams.
Brodhead-Juda junior Reuben Larson took 26th (18:47.5) to lead the Cardinals. Brodhead-Juda junior Blake Burns finished 34th (19:04.8), and senior Peter Speckman took 37th (19:14.9). Senior teammate Jakob Harper finished 47th (19:49.9), and sophomore Holden Whitledge was 50th (19:59).
In the girls small-school division, Albany outdistanced Marshall for the team title 54-64. Albany junior Ciara Kaderly finished third (19:38.4), and freshman Kirsten Oliver took seventh (21:20.9). Albany sophomore Emma Guenther finished 12th (22:03.7), and freshman Megan Anderson was 15th (22:04.9). Senior Emily Hauri took 17th (22:16.6).
Belleville junior Noelle Marie was the overall champion (19:15.6).
New Glarus-Monticello took fifth (128) as a team, and Pecatonica-Argyle was last (256) in the 11-team meet.
New Glarus-Monticello freshman Gabbie Sawyer took eighth (21:32.7), and senior Ashley Risley was 14th (22:04.7). Senior Jane Thurow took 31st (24:03.7) followed by junior Jenna Molencamp in 36th (24:29.4) and junior Kelley Fredrickson in 39th (24:38).
Pecatonica-Argyle had three runners in the top 60 led by junior Josie Penniston who took 21st (22:51.7). Senior Samantha Erickson ran to a 52nd-place finish (25:47.4), and senior Hannah James was 53rd (25:59).
The Brodhead-Juda girls finished fourth (92) in the nine-team large-school division.
Brodhead-Juda senior Taylor Bluemel won the large-school division race in 20:17.1. Sophomore teammate Cora Purdue took second (20:25.7), and sophomore Madee Harding was 14th (21:30.2). Senior teammate Danielle Dieckhoff took 33rd (22:57.3), and sophomore Morgan Tresemer finished 42nd (23:47.9).
In the boys JV race, Monroe placed second (69) behind Stoughton (25). Monroe sophomore Josh Smith finished 11th (19:10).
"He's continuing to get better," Hirsbrunner said. "He's starting to gain a lot of confidence and is really turning into a cross country runner."
Monroe junior Stephanie Sanft finished 24th (24:10) to lead the Cheesemakers to a fifth-place finish in the girls JV race.
