MONROE - It took Monroe's biggest dogs a set to acclimate to gusting winds at the local courts, but the Cheesemakers managed a 5-2 Badger South dual meet tennis victory over visiting McFarland on Tuesday evening.
Monroe's No. 1 singles player, Carson Root, had to work until the anything-but-bitter end to get his first varsity victory, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6, over Matt Ruch, with an 8-6 tie-breaker in the third and decisive set.
In No. 2 action, Matt Le defeated Kyle Kubicek, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6, and also won his tiebreak 8-6.
"This was a big win for both Carson and Matt," Monroe coach Jim Bartholf said.
Bartholf also was impressed with the way his No. 1 doubles duo, seniors Matt Turek and Levi Jannsens, pulled out a tough 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, come-from-behind victory.
Artem Bralgin lost a heartbreaking 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 match in No. 3 play and Dan Becker won his No. 4 match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, over Yunhuui Zhao.
Mark Hoesly and Jim Kundert claimed a straight-set, 6-2, 6-2, victory, while playing a No. 2 match right to Turek and Jannsen's left at Recreation Park. The No. 3 pairing of Nick Hendrickson and Trevor Arn dropped a hard-fought, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 match.
"The (overall) score looks like we won convincingly, but it was a very close match," Bartholf said.
The Cheesemakers' junior-varsity squad took a 9-6 decision over the Spartans, as Garrett Tschanz, Patrick Gellings, Eric Knudtson, Jakob Baertschi and Garrett Grinnell won their singles matches.
Monroe heads to Janesville Craig on Thursday for a non-conference dual meet before Waunakee visits Friday.
The doubles pairings of Tschanz and Gellings, Stewart Wyss and Jordan Everson, Blake Antos and Everson and, finally, Eric Radke and Antos, acheived doubles victories for the Cheesemakers.
