David G. LaBorde
David G. LaBorde, 61, of Brodhead.

"Grandpa Dave" LaBorde passed away peacefully at his home Monday, May 25, 2015 surrounded by his wife and daughters. He ended his battle with small-cell lung cancer after fighting for over a year and a half.

David Gene LaBorde was born January 11, 1954 in Freeport, Illinois to Robert and Jeannine (Bauer) LaBorde. He graduated from Brodhead High School in 1972 and joined the Air Force soon after. Dave married his high school sweetheart, Helen Joy Coomer, in October 1972. After five years in Texas and Southern Illinois, they moved back to Brodhead to live out the rest of their married life together. Dave and Helen have 4 daughters: Jennifer (Cristopher) Harris, Hailey (Frederick) Carvalho, Adyson (Ross) Totten, and their German AFS daughter, Judith Pinger. Dave was the proud Grandpa of seven beautiful grandchildren: Avery, Griffin, Owen, and Garett Harris; Isaac and Elin Totten; and Juniper Carvalho. He is also survived by 3 brothers: Michael (Teri) LaBorde and Jan LaBorde of Brodhead, and Timothy LaBorde of Cody, WY; father and mother-in-law, Harmon "Bud" and Mavis Coomer of Janesville; many nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Steven.

Beginning in 1982, Dave worked for the United States Post Office in Brodhead as a mail carrier for 27 years. After retirement in 2009 from USPS, Dave went back to work part-time for McClaren Machine & Tool.

Dave spent nearly a decade building and finishing two homes on Golf Course Road. Each home was big enough to house children and grandchildren comfortably on holidays and other special occasions. Several years after finishing the second house, Dave bought, assembled, and learned to operate a plasma cutter. With this machine, he enjoyed creating signs for friends and family, and designed and cut two sets of benches that can now be found at Trackside Mobil and Veterans Park, both in Brodhead.

Dave enjoyed golfing, slow pitch, and bowling. He was involved with youth baseball for many years, and was a coach for many of those years. He was a member of the Brodhead American Legion, and was a huge Chicago Bears fan. In the last years of his life, Dave's greatest joy was found in his family and caring for his home and surrounding property.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, May 30, 2015 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Brodhead, with Pastor Peder Johanson officiating. Burial will be in Avon cemetery, at a later date. A visitation will be held Friday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Everson Funeral Home is assisting the family.

The family wishes to thank the Mercy Oncology Department and Mercy Hospice Care for all their help and support.
