Sylvan L. Waage, 91, lifelong Monroe resident passed away on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at the Belmont Nursing and Rehabilitation Home in Madison. He was born on November 18, 1926, the son of Andrew and Emma (Phillipson) Waage in Argyle. Sylvan was united in marriage to Lorraine R. Hansen on August 19, 1950 at East Wiota Lutheran Church.
Having grown up in the Argyle area, Sylvan was extremely proud of the monument dedicated to his brother Amos’s memory.
Sylvan proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII, as a tank mechanic; he loved to tell stories about his days in the Army. He continued his work as a mechanic after returning home, having worked at Alphorn Ford for nearly 37 years, retiring as the Service Manager. Sylvan won many awards as a mechanic, including Best Service Manager for the state of Wisconsin and traveling to Bermuda for recognition for his work. He was loved by many Ford car owners for his knowledge and service.
Sylvan enjoyed volunteering at the Visitors Center at Monroe’s Historic Cheese Making Center. He was a member of Sons of Norway and Grace Lutheran Church, where he also served on the church council. He also loved fishing, playing cards in his card club, bowling, playing horse shoes, and gardening and landscaping around his home. Sylvan also refereed for high school sports, having played sports himself when he was young, and chaperoning for school trips. He especially loved to travel to see his family and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be remembered as a very generous man, and a great story teller.
Sylvan is survived by his children, David Waage of New Glarus, Audrey (John) Catalano of Austin, TX, Linda Johnson of Charlotte, NC, and Richard (Emily) Waage of Vero Beach, FL; 10 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Esther Disch of New Glarus.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Lorraine.
