Mary Lynette Eley, age 94, passed away on January 2, 2022, at the Monroe Clinic Hospital. She was born on August 11, 1927, in Dayton, WI to Alvah Louis and Mary S. (Schuler) Howard.
Lynette attended a one room school until going to high school in Belleville, WI. She graduated from high school at 16 years of age immediately moving to Madison to attend Business School while working at Kroger’s. Lynette went to UW-Platteville where she graduated with her 3-year teaching degree in 1948 and her Bachelor of Science degree in 1951.
Lynette’s first teaching job was in Evansville, WI where she taught second grade starting in January 1949 for 2 ½ years before moving to Monroe, WI. She taught second grade in Monroe at East School beginning in fall of 1951. After taking 16 years off from teaching to raise her family, Lynette went back to work, teaching third grade at East, South, and Parkside for an additional 25 years.
Lynette met and married the love of her life, David Eley, on November 20, 1953, in Dubuque, IA. They had four children, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Lynette was in a bowling league at Turner Hall in Monroe for about 35 years. Lynette and David belonged to a card club with 5 other couples for over 50 years. Lynette and her husband were avid Badger football fans and had season tickets for many years. As the grandchildren got older, they bought a third ticket so they could take a grandchild to every game with them. Lynette enjoyed spending time with her family and never missed a game, school program or going to the Green County Fair with her grandchildren. Lynette also loved the Milwaukee Brewers, orange soda, and playing board games with her family. She thoroughly loved life to the very end.
Survivors include her four children, David L. Eley, Jr.; Jayne (Dennis) Kent and their children, Benjamin, and Ashley; Susan (Larry) Buetzer and their son, Russell; and Kurt (Patty) Eley and their children, Chelsey (Matt) O’Brien and Andy (Kally) Eley. Lynette also had three great-grandchildren, Liam and Bryson O’Brien and Maliah Eley. She is further survived by brother-in-law, Daniel (Mary) Eley; sister-in-law, Ramona Eley and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David; her parents; her brother, Russell; and brothers-in-law, John (Anna) Eley and Richard Eley.
There will be a private family service at the Union Presbyterian Church in Monroe with The Reverend Stacy Cavanaugh officiating. The family is planning a Celebration of Life to be held later. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Monroe. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in Lynette’s name.
