John J. “J.J.” Foley, age 93 of Woodford, died on Friday, April 10, 2020 at the Lafayette Manor. J.J. was born on May 28, 1926 at home in Adams Township, Green county, the son of Leo J. Foley and Kathryn F. Menehan. He attended Dry Goods Box rural school. J.J. married Hazel S. Berg on November 20, 1946 at the St. Victor Catholic Church parsonage in Monroe. The couple farmed next to the Jordan Lutheran Church in Jordan Township. After moving to Woodford in 1952, J.J. began his career hauling livestock. He later delivered cheese and butter from the Lafayette County Creamery to stores in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan. On his return trips from Michigan, J.J. hauled fresh fruit to Skip Brennan’s stores. His last job was a courier for Woodford State Bank for 17 years. J.J. was a member of the Woodford Fire Department, serving as chief for several years.
He is survived by two sons, Duane (Marcia) Foley of Woodford, Daryl (Betsy) Foley of Monroe; grandchildren, Scott, Kevin, Jason Foley; step-grandchildren, Jeremy Elmer, Jennifer Dudak; great grandchildren, Joshua, Conner, Colin, Addison, Lucas, Abigail; step-great grandchildren, Haley, Ava, and Ella; a sister, Nancy (Robert) Duerst of Monticello; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Hazel, on Sept. 24, 2017; and an infant sister, Margaret Elizabeth.
Private family graveside services will be held in Calvary Cemetery, Monroe, with Monsignor Larry Bakke officiating. A public celebration of life will be held at a later date. A memorial fund will be established in J.J.’s name for the Woodford Fire Department, P.O. Box 26, Woodford, WI 53599. The Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe, is assisting the family.
