George W. Norton, Sr., age 92, of rural Monticello passed away on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 at his home. He was born the son of Chester and Wretha (Figi) Norton on March 10, 1931 in Monroe. He was a graduate of Monroe High School. George was united in marriage to Doris M. Schuetz on October 11, 1953 in Monroe, sharing 70 years together.
Until his mid-40’s he farmed the original Norton farm, south of Monroe. In 1971, along with his wife, he purchased an old abandoned farmstead near Monticello which he painstakingly restored. For a short time he was also employed by Helgus Harvestore as a salesman but missed the independence of working with farmers, thus was born Norton Feedlot Equipment, specializing in Harvestore sales and service.
He was, at heart, a farmer who enjoyed planting and caring for his three gardens (donating any extra produce to family, neighbors and Green Cares). He also was a man of many hobbies including bowling, fishing, hunting, and jeeping.
George is survived by his wife, Doris; children, George “Bill” Norton, Jr. and Nikki Norton; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Kenneth; and sister, Carmen.
Graveside Services will be held at 11AM on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at Greenwood Cemetery in Monroe.
A Celebration of George’s life will also be held at SHRINER HAGER GOHLKE Funeral Home on Saturday, March 23, 2024 from 2:00-4:00 PM.
