Ernest Halbheer, age 87 of Monroe, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, August 26, 2020.
He was born the son of Otto and Rosa (Swienglo) Halbheer on August 27, 1932 in Wald, Switzerland. Ernest was united in marriage to Gisela Schuster on April 8, 1961.
Ernie moved to the United States in 1958 from Zurich, Switzerland. His move to the U.S., along with his cheesemaking career, are documented by the National Historic Cheesemaking Center. Look for it on their YouTube channel.
Ernie was a Charter Member of Monroe Swiss Singers and also sang with the New Glarus Jolderklub and Männerchor. Ernie loved being social and helping others. He was a volunteer fire fighter in Rockford, Ill. Upon moving back to Monroe, he volunteered in any way he could at Turner Hall and the National Historic Cheesemaking Center. He was described as a "fierce" Jass player by his friends and shared his love of playing cards with those at the Behring Senior Center. Ernst never forgot his beloved Switzerland and was able to visit just last summer.
Ernie is survived by his wife of 59 years, Gisela of Monroe; daughter, Heidi (Michael) Barreyro of La Crosse; grandchildren, Drake and Odessa Barreyro; siblings, Hans, Karl, Jakob, Eugen and Rosemarie and their family, all of Switzerland; cat of 19 years, Zwiebach and many, many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Albert.
"No fuss, no muss" were his wishes. But he did always appreciate a good party with friends, so once we can all sing together again, a celebration of Ernie's life will be held at Turner Hall.
Memorials may be made to the Monroe Swiss Singers or Turner Hall.
