Christopher Everett Janke, beloved husband of 44 years to Sally West, and father to Benjamin West Janke and Amanda Janke Wyatt, passed away on Saturday, May 6, 2023 at the age of 70. Born in Monroe, Wisconsin on June 22, 1952, Chris was the third of five boys born to Marian Regez Janke and Donald William Janke. In his youth, Chris enjoyed spending time in the woods of northern Wisconsin and at the Janke family lake houses on the Paya and Black Oak Lakes. Chris’ dad was a cheese broker for the Triangle Cheese Co., and before graduating from Monroe High School, Chris earned his pilot’s license and flew his father on business trips. In the early 1970’s, Chris and his buddies founded the garage rock band, The Undecided. Chris played the drums, and the band toured throughout Wisconsin until graduation. Chris attended LSU for his undergraduate degree in Geology and in 1977, Chris earned his J.D. from the Paul M. Hebert Law Center at LSU. He was one of the earliest partners at the New Orleans firm of Gordon Arata and later joined the firm of Strain, Dennis, and Bates. He was a member of several professional organizations, including the Mineral Law Institute and PLANO, where he received numerous honors including Landman of the Year. Chris served as the Scoutmaster for Troop 434 out of St. Martin’s Episcopal School, where he trained countless youth and adult leaders. He was also instrumental in trailblazing hiking paths and renovations for Salmen Scout Reservation. An avid woodworker, Chris enjoyed turning bowls and crafting fine pieces of furniture. Chris is survived by his wife Sally, son Ben (Elizabeth Ogden) of New Orleans, daughter Amanda (Adam Wyatt) of Baton Rouge; brothers Dan (Judy), Matt (Dawn), Andrew (Maggie), and sister-in-law Sue Janke of Wisconsin; and grandchildren Henry, Hayden, and Jack Janke, and Lillian and Dylan Wyatt. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who he loved so much. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Don, father-in-law H.D. West, mother-in-law Margaret Humphreys West, sister-in-law Amy West Strain, and brother-in-law William Strain. Relatives and friends are invited to attend Funeral Services on Saturday, May 13th, 2023 at LAKE LAWN METAIRIE FUNERAL HOME, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. Visitation is from 1 - 2 p.m. with a private memorial service and interment to follow at Metairie Cemetery.
