MONROE - WTJK AM 1380 in Beloit has changed its call letters to WBEL-AM effective Monday, announced Scott Thompson of Big Radio in Monroe, Freeport and Janesville/Beloit. The change has been approved by the FCC.
Thompson said the station signed on as WBEL in 1948. It is a full-time 5,000 watt radio station, and Thompson said he intends for it to feature local news, weather and high school sports with local personalities from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m.
With the pending sale of WGEZ to the radio group, both WGEZ and WBEL will be broadcast from studios in downtown Beloit. The WGEZ sale is expected to be approved by the FCC by the end of the year.
Recently, Thompson named his son, Ben Thompson, to be general manager of WGEZ and market manager of Janesville/Beloit effective Dec. 1. Ben Thompson has been with Magnetar Capital, an Evanston, Ill.-based hedge fund, since graduating from DePaul University in finance and accounting.
