MONROE - A Freeport woman appeared in court Monday on a 28-year-old charge of issuing a worthless check for $141.
Darlene J. Steele, 56, stood mute on one Class A misdemeanor charge of issuing worthless checks. Green County Judge James Beer entered a not guilty plea on her behalf.
The charge stems from an incident on March 27, 1988, when Steele allegedly issued a check valued at $141.17 to Walmart in Monroe. According to the police report, Steele's bank account had closed by the time the check was cashed.
After Steele failed to respond to notices about the declined check, a warrant was issued for her arrest. The warrant remained open for 28 years until Steele was booked on Feb. 26 of this year.
The maximum sentence for a Class A misdemeanor is nine months of imprisonment or a fine of $10,000. Steele will next appear in court for a pre-trial conference on May 17.
