DARLINGTON - The Darlington school board Wednesday offered the district superintendent position to Denise Wellnitz.
Wellnitz is director of pupil services, special education services and bilingual services in the Clinton school district.
Darlington school district Superintendent Joseph Galle said the board was impressed with Wellnitz and thinks she is a good choice for the district.
She will let the district know early next week if she intends to take the job, Galle said. If she accepts the position, she will begin her duties July 1.
Wellnitz was one of four candidates for the position, which included Monroe Middle School Principal Bill Van Meer.
The candidates met with the board and a committee that conducted a superintendent search last week. After the meetings, Wellnitz was the front-runner for the job and was brought in for another interview Wednesday.
If she accepts the job, she will replace Galle, who has served as superintendent of the district for nine years. He plans to retire at the end of the school year.
