MONROE - The fate of the annual balloon rally in Monroe will be decided Wednesday morning.

The Monroe Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) board will decide during a meeting at 7:05 a.m. Wednesday whether there will be a rally this summer. The public is invited to the meeting, which is in the board room in the upstairs of the Chamber office, 1505 9th St., Monroe.

MCCI has been discussing whether to have the 24th annual balloon rally, scheduled for June 26-28, after losing $8,000 on the event in 2008.

"We're trying to be very smart about this," MCCI Director Pam Christopher told the Times. "It's a good community event, and we're trying to make it financially sound and put on a good event."

The MCCI board is exploring options that include seeking more sponsorships, donations and volunteers.
