MONROE - Ryan Dahmen, store manager at the new Cousins Subs in Monroe, was busy Monday slicing up meats and cheeses.

"Everybody is ready to go," Dahmen said, as Cousins Subs is set for its grand opening to customers Thursday at the city's newest business center.

After months of preparations, owners Tom and Kay Olson are swinging open the doors of the first business in the Northpass development, and the franchise's newest location, at 250 N. 18th Ave.

The shop will seat 36 customers, and features two 42-inch plasma televisions. One is located at each end of the store.

The sandwich shop will be open for business from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sundays.

In advance of Thursday's opening is a Friends and Family Preview on Tuesday night and a VIP Celebration on Wednesday.

The store's staff of six will be on duty, along with the Madison district's helpers to coordinate, to handle the expected first day rush of customers.

Dahmen said he and the Olsons have been hearing a lot of good reports from the city and local businesses.

"They're excited," he said. "Everybody has been very supportive."

Cousins Subs in Monroe is doing more than sub sandwiches.

"The interesting thing about this Cousins is that we have a deep fryer for French fries," Dahmen said.

"We also have a grill, so we can do Philly beef sandwiches, or regular cheese, and hot ham and cheese sandwiches. They won't be microwaved," he said.

The grill also will allow the shop to warm up bread and served toasted subs.

Customers looking for greens will find Cousins sells five varieties of salads.

If there is any room left for dessert, Dahmen said they have a tempting array of fresh baked cookies: chocolate chip, peanut butter or M&M, for example.

Cousins offers box lunches and party platters, as well as Coke products, coffee, iced tea, lemonade, chocolate and white milk and water.

"If the weather cooperates, it'll make for a great grand opening," Dahmen said.

Of course, Cousins still will make cold subs.

But serving hot, toasty or melty cheese, grilled sandwiches won't hurt business when you're opening during the first week of February in Wisconsin.
