DARLINGTON - A Darlington High School student was arrested at about 11:45 a.m. Friday at the Darlington High School, following a police investigation into an alleged fraudulent enrollment.

Elias Sanchez-Alfonso, 21, Darlington, was arrested for obstructing an officer and fraud after an investigation revealed he falsely identified himself as a 16-year-old child in order to enroll at Darlington High School in January of 2010. Alfonso has been a student at DHS since his enrollment in 2010.

According to a City of Darlington Police Department news release, the investigation was a result of a confidential tip received by the Darlington Police.

At this time, the findings in the investigation suggest the only motive Alfonso had for committing the alleged fraud was to acquire an education.

Police Chief Jason King reported police have no cause to believe Alfonso had any further criminal intent and learned Alfonso was not a disciplinary problem for school personnel.

Alfonso remains jailed pending future court hearings and deportation proceedings.

During the course of the investigation, Margarita Hernandez-Rodriguez, 38, Darlington, was also arrested for fraud.

Hernandez posed as Alfonso's mother and falsified enrollment documents at the school. She was released pending court.
