DARLINGTON — A Shullsburg man faces criminal charges for the five people in addition to himself who were injured in a head-on crash earlier this year in Lafayette County.
Cameron Sean-Jeffrey Doyle, 21, made his initial appearance in court via video on Oct. 5. His signature bond is set at $5,000, with conditions that he not drink or go into bars or liquor stores.
He’s charged with four Class F felony counts of causing injury by intoxicated use of a vehicle and one misdemeanor count of causing injury while under the influence. Each felony carries a maximum prison term of 12 and a half years.
He’s due back in court for an arraignment Nov. 24.
The case stems from an investigation into a crash that occurred at about 11:15 p.m. June 27 near Shullsburg on County O just north of Dry Bone Road, Town of Seymour.
Doyle was northbound in a 2016 Chevrolet Cruze when he crossed the centerline and hit a southbound 2013 Dodge, according to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office. The collision happened right after the Dodge crested a hill.
Five of the six people injured were hurt seriously enough to be airlifted to a Madison hospital, including Doyle.
His passenger, Hunter D. Alt, 20, Plain, was transported to Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County and then also airlifted to Madison. Alt was cited for underage drinking in connection to the investigation.
The driver of the Dodge, 34-year-old Heather M. Mick of Shullsburg, and her passenger Twyla M. Mick, 61, also of Shullsburg, along with two children in the vehicle, were all transported to Memorial Hospital.
Three of the four Dodge occupants were then also airlifted to the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison.
According to the criminal complaint, Alt told police he and Doyle went golfing at Lancaster Country Club earlier that day, then met up with friends at an apartment in Platteville before getting drinks that night at The Burg, a bar and restaurant in Shullsburg.
The crash scene was “chaotic,” with first responders tending to multiple people with critical injuries, one officer reported. Doyle sustained a “severe leg injury.”
Police reports indicate Doyle smelled of alcohol and his blood-alcohol concentration was 0.14%, nearly twice the legal limit for driving. Officers found two cases of Busch Light beer in the Chevrolet Cruze.
In separate civil cases, court records show UW Hospital is seeking to hold Doyle responsible for liens related to treatment of two people injured in the crash — nearly $154,000 for Alt and $69,000 for Twyla Mick.
