DARLINGTON - Denise Wellnitz accepted the position as superintendent of the Darlington school district Tuesday.
Wellnitz is director of pupil services, special education services and bilingual services in the Clinton school district.
Darlington superintendent Joseph Galle said Wellnitz returned a signed contract to the district Tuesday. She was selected to fill the position by the school board on Feb. 4, Galle said last week. Wellnitz will begin her new job July 1.
Galle, who has been with the district for 37 years as a teacher and as superintendent for the past nine years, plans to enjoy his retirement, which begins June 30.
"I tell people that I don't know what I'm going to do next, but if I don't like it, I plan to do something else," he joked.
He said he's enjoyed working with the school board, which over the past few years has included former students.
