SPRING VALLEY TOWNSHIP - An 8-year-old boy from rural Brodhead died Saturday night after being ejected from the utility vehicle he was driving, according to a press release from the Rock County Sheriff's Department.
Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of the crash at about 8:02 p.m., in a farm field at 5746 S. Holden Road, the release said.
Emergency personnel arrived a few minutes later to find the boy unresponsive, not breathing, bleeding from the ears and somewhat cold to the touch.
The boy had been operating a John Deere Gator off-road utility vehicle southeast of a field access lane when he lost control and failed to navigate a curve, according to an initial investigation, the release said. The utility vehicle rolled over and down a 6-foot berm. A man hired to work on the farm found the boy who was ejected and pinned underneath the vehicle, the release said.
The man and the boy's father freed the boy and began to administer CPR. Once emergency personnel arrived, they continued CPR and began using an automatic external defibrillator. The boy was then transferred by ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Janesville and was pronounced dead at 9:25 p.m.
The boy's name is being withheld until the family can be notified.
The boy had operated the Gator several times in the past, but he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The accident is still under investigation by the Rock County Sheriff's Department and the coroner's office. No foul play is suspected and no criminal charges are anticipated, according to the press release.
