MONROE - For the rest of the week, Pleasant View Nursing Home will remain closed to visitors because of a virus that is making the rounds at the facility.

Administrator Don Stoor said the nursing home began asking visitors to stay away last week.

Stoor said some of the residents have the Norovirus and the virus can easily spread from patient to patient if people come in to visit more than one patient. A visitor with the virus can also spread it to patients who might not have the virus.

In addition, he said, he doesn't want patients to spread the virus to visitors.

"We want to protect the patients and the public," Stoor said.

The virus can be difficult for seniors, Stoor said.

He added he hopes the virus will run its course by the end of the week and visitors will be allowed into the nursing home.

According to the Center for Disease Control's Web site, cdc.gov, the Noroviruses are "a group of viruses that cause the 'stomach flu.'" Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and some stomach cramping.

The virus can also cause low fevers, chills, headaches, muscle aches and a general sense of tiredness.

The CDC's Web site said people contract the disease by coming into contact with others who are infected and showing symptoms or by touching surfaces or objects contaminated with Norovirus and then placing their hands in their mouth or by sharing foods or eating utensils with someone who is ill.

"Some people infected with Norovirus are contagious from the moment they begin feeling ill to at least three days after recovery.

"Some people may be contagious for as long as two weeks after recovery," the CDC says.
