Patchouli to play MAC

MONROE - National touring, award winning singers, songwriters, performers, and musicians Julie Patchouli and Bruce Hecksel, will open the Monroe Arts Center Summer Concert Series at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 11, at the Monroe Arts Center Gunderson Stiles Concert Hall, 1315 11th St.

The duo, known as Patchouli, combines down-to-earth songwriting with elements of folk, pop, flamenco and jazz with world beat rhythms.

When they recorded their first jam session together in 1993, with Bruce playing an acoustic guitar and Julie on a five-gallon pail, they discovered their mutual desire to create music together out of anything and everything around them. Julie now plays multiple instruments, including six and twelve-string guitars, upright bass, marimbas, flutes, and hand drums.

Hecksel is a master guitarist who can move with ease between finger style, flamenco, classical, jazz, flat-picking, and folk-style methods of guitar playing. He studied concert piano, choral compositions, and plays bass guitar and percussion on stage. In addition, he is a visual artist and his paintings can be seen on Patchouli CDs and in various galleries throughout the Midwest.

The duo has been touring non-stop for 11 years and just released their 14th CD. In 2010, Patchouli was voted "Songwriter of the Year" by The Unvarnished Music Festival, honorary co-Directors of the Shawano Folk Festival, and honored as number one folk group of all time by Chicago's oldest folk society for their 40th anniversary celebration.

Reserved individual seat tickets for Patchouli are $25 and $20, and may be purchased by calling the Monroe Arts Center at (608) 325-5700, or in person at the box office.
