MONROE - Green Haven Family Advocates is planning several events to highlight National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October.

Green Haven officials said the month "is a time to reflect on how communities can work together to build healthy families, free from the threat of violence and to celebrate those who have worked hard to break the cycle."

Domestic violence is defined as a pattern of coercive and controlling behaviors including physical, sexual emotional as well as economic - used by one intimate partner against another to gain, maintain or regain power and control in the relationship. The tactics are used to frighten, terrorize, manipulate, hurt, humiliate and blame the victim. Domestic Violence affects people of all race, age, gender and economic levels. It is estimated one in four and one in 13 men will experience domestic violence in their lifetimes.

More than 400 Green County victims where assisted and more than 1,400 calls were answered on the 24-hour crisis line by Green Haven Family Advocates in 2010.

During October, Green Haven will display The Clothes Line Project. The exhibit includes t-shirts designed by victims and/or family members visually displaying their emotions regarding their past abuse.

Other events in October are:

• Toefflers Pub and Grill in New Glarus is sponsoring a chili cook-off on Sunday, Oct. 9, with proceeds donated to Green Haven.

• 50/50 raffle, with winning ticket to be picked Monday Oct. 31.
