MONROE - Jeff Newcomer was sworn in as the Ward 4 alderman Tuesday, May 7 at the City of Monroe Common Council meeting.

The council appointed Newcomer for a term to run until April 2014. Another election for the seat will be held next spring for a one-year term.

The Ward 4 alderman has been assigned by Mayor Bill Ross as a member of eight committees or boards, including Board of Public Works, Judiciary and Ordinance Review Committee, Historic Preservation Commission and Information Technology Committee.

Newcomer, along with William Bethke, was also appointed and confirmed Tuesday to the Redevelopment Authority Board of Commissioners.

Newcomer was selected by Ross and Council President Michael Boyce out of three individuals who volunteered to be considered for the position.

Eight individuals were write-in candidates for the Ward 4 election in the April, which had no declared candidates. All declined the position or could not be reached.

Earlier Tuesday, members of the Board of Public Works elected Reid Stangel as president and Charles Schuringa as vice-president.
