NEW GLARUS - The Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of Wisconsin has chosen New Glarus as the site of their Loyalty Day Parade on Saturday. This year's theme is "Honoring all Veterans."

New Glarus Memorial VFW Post 10549 will host the afternoon events.

Wisconsin VFW State Commander and Post 10549 Commander Bill Hustad, New Glarus, is pleased with the choice.

"I've been hoping for that as I got closer to state commander," he said. Hustad became state commander in June 2007.

This is the first time the parade has been held in New Glarus. Next year the parade will be in Lancaster.

The Loyalty Day Parade gives all veterans groups and other patriotic Americans the chance to show loyalty to the flag and to the United States.

The VFW Loyalty Day Parade is held the last Saturday prior to May 1. One parade is held in the state each year.

The parade in New Glarus will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Railroad Street near the Swiss Lanes bowling alley and will end at the fire station. It is expected to last about one hour. A program book with local ads and parade lineup will be distributed.

More than 50 entries are scheduled, with music, floats and marching units from Wisconsin VFW posts and Ladies Auxiliaries, VFW state and national officers, Wisconsin Viet Nam Inc., Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA), as well as others.

"Some units will be passing out flags along the route," Hustad said.

Additional ceremonies and festivities will be held at 3 p.m. at the fire station at 280 Fourth Ave. Food and refreshments will be available, and awards will be presented to outstanding participants.

Speakers will be John Scocos, secretary of Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs; William Hustad, VFW state commander; Joyce Hoffman, president of the State VFW Ladies Auxiliary; and Erwin Zweifel, New Glarus village president. Nancy Marty will be singing two patriotic songs and local Girl Scouts will lead the pledge of allegiance.
