In 1918, a partnership was formed by Herman L. Karlen and his sons, Royal and Cloyance, to purchase the Ford dealership from Leon Voegeli and Ray Schoonover, who had both been inducted into the Army. In 1919, land was purchased at 120 W. North Ave. and a modern brick one-story building was constructed. In 1920, the decision was made to build a second story on the present building as a recreation center for Monticello.
