MONROE - Monroe summer school will be held at the middle school this year because of maintenance projects that are scheduled at the high school over the summer.
This will be the first time MMS has hosted summer school in a "long time," said Terri Montgomery, the district's director of curriculum and instruction.
Registration for summer classes begins March 23 and ends April 2.
The first session of summer school begins on June 15, a week after the spring semester ends, and will run for three weeks. Students will have the week of July 6 off before the second session begins on July 13 for another 3-week stretch. It is set to end July 31.
The last day of school for students in the 2014-15 school year is June 5, unless there is more inclement weather, Montgomery said.
Along with some changes to existing courses, 16 new classes are being offered this summer, including:
Lego Fun! Let's Build!
Disk Golf at Twining Park
Stretch, Breath, Relax
Dino Kids
Farming Adventures
Funky, Fiber Art
Get Pumped
Move It
Moving and Grooving
Notebooks in Nature
On Stage Slapstick Comedy
Pinterest Projects Class
Science is Fun!
Surf & Turf (swimming and games on land)
Zentangles
The Book Nook
Summer school participation has increased over the last three years, with 85 more students taking classes in 2014 than in 2012, for a 2014 total of 1,380, according to Montgomery.
The MHS projects include the replacement of the track and work on the gym floor.
