Monroe School Board Bullets: April 24, 2013

In a Monroe school board meeting Monday, April 22, the board:

• Approved a $138,558 wireless bid proposal from Heartland Business Systems to add wireless connection to Monroe High School.

The original bid was $148,747, but included wireless service for the athletic fields for physical education teachers, track meets and football games. Monroe Business Manager Ron Olson said the district can save $5,740 by making the purchase by Friday, April 26 and may add wireless services to the athletic fields if the district receives a PEP grant.

• Approved the final non-renewal/layoff notice for two Monroe Alternative Charter School teachers, which is expected to save the district about $140,000.

• Agreed to purchase 185 HP computers from CoreBTS for about $86,580. The purchase is being made with money from the technology budget. The computers will be for the elementary schools.

• Approved a 90-percent health coverage reimbursement for staff who take part in the Biometric health assessment screening. Those employees who don't take the health assessment will receive a 10 percent reduction in health coverage.

• Approved Schrenk Brothers' roofing bid of $81,142 for the Monroe Middle School auditorium roof.

• Listened to a presentation by the MHS Investment Club. The club, through investing in the stock market, has developed a stock portfolio that has made $1,300. The clubs will donate the money to the Community Foundation in May.

• Updated a lease agreement with Rainbow Childcare for a new monthly rate of $600 per month for the before- and after-school program at Parkside Elementary School.

• Gave the oath of office to four re-elected board members: Dan Bartholf, Les Bieneman, Scott Schmidt and Brian Keith. Bob Erb was elected school board president again. Schmidt was elected vice president; Larry Eakins was elected treasurer; Amy Bazley was electedclerk and Michael Boehme was elected deputy clerk. Bartholf, Bieneman and Schmidt each have three-year terms and Keith has a one-year term.

• Approved hiring Krystle Koelker as a guidance counselor at Northside Elementary School and Saycha Basken as a psychologist at the high school. Basken will replace Jeriamy Jackson, who will become the assistant principal at the high school

July 1.
