MONROE - At a meeting Wednesday, the City of Monroe Judiciary and Ordinance Review Committee:
- Recommend to the council an ordinance which would repeal an earlier ordinance that allowed taxpayers a 60-day extension before meeting with the board of review. The change is needed to meet state laws. A 2007 state law, Act 86, giving municipalities the option of passing an ordinance allowing a 60-day extension, but the Wisconsin Supreme Court found the option prevented taxpayers from contesting their refund action cases in court, violating the Equal Protection Clause.
- Postponed action on changes to city code to specify where solid wastes must be taken by commercial disposal companies operating within the city. Committee members asked for more information from the Green County Solid Waste Consortium.
- Voted unanimously to take no action to expand the quota of class A liquor licenses, for the sale of packaged liquor, in the city and to keep an application from Dollar General on file. The city currently has 12 licenses, all of which are granted. The state does not limit the number of class A licenses.
- Voted to move the deadline for submitting agenda items to the city clerk office to noon Wednesday. The change is to allow agenda packets to be ready for council members by 6 p.m. Thursday, giving members more time to research upcoming issues before meetings.
