Man gets prison for absconding with teenage girl
Girl’s parent calls for lighter punishment before sentencing

MONROE — An Evansville man was sentenced to prison Sept. 14 in Green County Circuit Court for absconding with a 14-year-old New Glarus girl and repeatedly violating court orders not to have contact with her or further break the law.

As part of a plea deal, Keith Daniel Hartje, 22, pleaded guilty to felony charges of interfering with the custody of a child, possessing an intimate representation of a person younger than 18 and two counts of bail jumping.

He was sentenced to three years in prison and five years on extended supervision.

Other felony charges, including possession of marijuana, possession of psychedelic mushrooms and numerous counts of bail jumping, were dismissed but “read in,” meaning the judge could consider them at sentencing.

Conditions of Hartje’s sentence include no contact with the victim, complying with the state sex offender registry and undergoing sex offender treatment and counseling.

In a victim impact statement, a parent of the victim asked for a significantly lesser sentence: four years on probation with an ankle monitor, 90 days in jail and no contact with the girl.

“He is just a stupid young kid,” the parent wrote of Hartje. “I would hope he has learned his lesson with all this.”

Hartje was charged in October 2017 with three felony counts of interfering with child custody, stemming from an investigation into allegations that he caused the New Glarus girl to leave her parents without their consent on three occasions in the previous two months.

He and the girl went on road trips together to Illinois, Iowa and around Wisconsin, disappearing for days at a time, shoplifting and stealing gas along the way, according to court records. The girl had a history of sneaking out to meet him, and one of her parents had gone so far as to nail her bedroom window shut to keep her home.

One of their trips caused her to be truant from school in early October. Police eventually located her and Hartje at a cabin in northern Wisconsin.

In the months that followed, Hartje racked up three bail jumping cases in Green and Rock counties for having contact with the girl or otherwise breaking conditions of his bond.

In March, police reported apprehending Hartje once again outside the girl’s home and finding pornographic images of her on his phone. He also reportedly had psychedelic mushrooms and marijuana in his possession.
