Man arrested in crash that killed woman's unborn child

ORFORDVILLE - A Janesville man was arrested on a charge of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle after a Thursday crash in Orfordville killed an unborn child.

Brandon L. Russell, 26, of Janesville also was arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana; possession of drug paraphernalia; third offense OWI with a passenger under 16; four counts of OWI causing injury, three of which are felonies; operating while suspended causing death; and operating a vehicle without insurance.

At 5:34 p.m. Thursday, an officer from the Orfordville Police Department came across a two-vehicle crash on Wisconsin 11 near Genesis Drive in Orfordville.

A 2003 Chevrolet driven by Russell was traveling east on Wis. 11 when the vehicle drifted onto the south shoulder. Russell over corrected his steering and lost control, causing his vehicle to slide across the centerline, according to an Orfordville police news release.

Russell's vehicle collided with a westbound 2003 Toyota Sedan driven by a 29-year-old pregnant woman from Brodhead, according to the release.

The woman and her 4-year-old son were transported to Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center in Janesville. The woman, who was 34 weeks pregnant, was taken to surgery and eventually lost her baby as a result of injuries sustained in the crash, according to the release.

An autopsy on the baby was scheduled for Friday at the Dane County Morgue, according to the release.

The woman and her 4-year-old son were admitted at Mercy. The boy was later transported to Rockford Memorial Hospital with possible internal injuries, according to the news release.

Russell was traveling with 2-year-old twin sons. He and his sons were transported to Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center, where they were treated and released, according to the release.

Russell admitted smoking marijuana before the crash, according to police. He refused a legal blood draw and a search warrant was obtained to retrieve a blood sample, according to the release.

After treatment at the hospital, Russell was arrested and booked at the Rock County Jail. He will have an initial appearance on Monday in Rock County Court, according to the release.

The Wisconsin State Patrol is doing a crash reconstruction.
