MONROE - The Monroe Art Center Frehner Gallery presents "Message from Swaziland" by Monroe artist Jennifer Rikkers, Thursday, April 1, through Friday, April 30. This exhibit was created with the intention of sharing the message of the Swazi people, a country ravaged with the greatest HIV/AIDS crisis in the world.
In this moving exhibit, Rikkers displays work inspired by her participation in the 2008 Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation AIDS Walk Africa. Each image is created from her original photography in a mixed-media acrylic painting format and features the Swazi people who touched her soul in her travels. Because in Swaziland 33 percent of the population is infected with the HIV/AIDS virus, 33 percent of the artwork sold will be directly donated to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation to support their amazing work fighting pediatric AIDS.
An opening reception for this exhibit is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 1, in the Monroe Arts Center Frehner Gallery. Rikkers will give a brief gallery talk beginning at 5:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public, and is for art lovers of all levels. Visitors are welcome to stroll through the gallery on your way home from work or school and enjoy the artwork in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.
This exhibit has been made possible by Monroe Arts Center Corporate Underwriter-The Swiss Colony, and Season Media Underwriters, Monroe Publishing and Big Radio. Additional support has been provided by Michael and Shelley Muranyi, Deb Thompson, Lee and Chris Knuteson, Barb Woodriff, and Pete Guenther.
