NEW GLARUS - Libraries across Green County, along with the Friends of New Glarus Woods State Park, are hosting an evening of family fun from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday at New Glarus Woods State Park, W5446 Highway NN, New Glarus.
Activities including story time, arts and crafts and a scavenger hunt will run from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. There will also be opportunities for quiet reading and trail walking. A presentation on the furbearers of Wisconsin will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. Children will also have a chance to draw their favorite furbearing animal and submit it for inclusion on future signage at the park.
Families are encouraged to bring picnic dinners to the park. Attendees who do not have a 2017 Wisconsin State Parks sticker can receive free admission by showing a Wisconsin library card at the ranger station starting at 4 p.m. This year's Summer Reading Program theme, "Build a Better World," encourages participants to appreciate resources on a local, national, and global level, including an appreciation of the outdoors.
"Because our summer reading program focuses on how we can better our communities and our world, a countywide library event was a natural fit. We are excited to bring our libraries to the outdoors and highlight the natural resources Green County offers," said Angela Noel, library director at Brodhead Memorial Public Library.
"The Friends of New Glarus Woods State Park are excited by the collaboration with the libraries of Green County, as it offers an opportunity to attract a broad range of visitors to the park. We hope to welcome many newcomers to discover the beauty of a state park that is right here in Green County," said Beth Blahut, co-president of the Friends of New Glarus Woods State Park.
The evening will include a presentation on the furbearers of Wisconsin by Jamie Nack, University of Wisconsin-Extension Certified Wildlife Biologist. Wisconsin is home to 19 furbearing species including fox, fisher and muskrat. Attendees will learn about animal habits and habitats and also have a chance to touch and explore pelts, skulls, and tracks.
