DARLINGTON - Police here encountered a knife-wielding man who apparently stabbed himself on a city street late Saturday night.

According to police, an officer responded to a reported disturbance at a Galena Street residence on Saturday, just after 11:45 p.m.

There, the officer reportedly found a shirtless man, later identified as Guillermo Xoyo-Coyott, 24, of Darlington, standing on the sidewalk in front of a home, a knife impaled in his abdomen. But when Xoyo-Coyott saw police, he reportedly pulled the knife out of his body, held it in his hand, and approached the responding officer.

"After failing to obey the officer's orders, Xoyo-Coyott was immobilized with an electronic stun from a Taser and taken into custody," a statement from Darlington Police Chief Jason King said. Xoyo-Coyott was then transported by Rural Medical Ambulance Service to Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County for treatment for his knife wound.

His condition was unavailable late Sunday.

Police said a subsequent investigation of the matter revealed that the knife wound was "self-inflicted."

Xoyo-Coyott, according to authorities, was set to have a mental health assessment. When that's complete, he was to be taken to the Lafayette County Jail in Darlington to face charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Lafayette County Sheriff's deupties also assisted at the scene.
