MONROE - The Green County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday decided to continue with the Clean Sweep program even though the state won't give money for the program this year.
Green County Board member Harvey Mandel said the program is needed to help dispose of hazardous materials throughout the county, and said the county benefits from Clean Sweep.
The state cut funding for the program in January due to budget constraints.
The county budgeted $8,000 in the 2009 budget to help pay for the program.
The board voted Tuesday to add another $12,000 to the program to allow the county to conduct a smaller Clean Sweep program.
"We may not be able to do it on as large a scale as before, but I think it's something we need to have," board chairman Art Carter said.
Carter said the program probably will take place in May.
In the five Clean Sweep Collection programs conducted in the county since 1993, more than 76,000 pounds of hazardous material have been collected. The goal of the program is to make sure the items are disposed of properly or to make sure the items are recycled.
