MONROE - On Tuesday, at the conclusion of an annual report he has routinely given the Green County Board of Supervisors each year, Green County Sheriff Randy Roderick gave the group quite a surprise.

Roderick announced he wouldn't seek another term as sheriff.

"I've enjoyed serving the public," Roderick said. "I will continue to enjoy the privilege of serving the county for the remainder of the year."

Roderick has been Green County Sheriff since 2001. His current term expires in January.

Roderick said the decision was made for some time. Roderick said that after 38 years in law enforcement he felt the time to right to retire.

Green County Board Supervisor Dennis Dalton, who is chairman of the Green County Law Enforcement Committee, said the announcement was a "huge shock."

"This will be a huge loss for the county," Dalton said. "Randy has always been honest and fair with everybody. Nobody has a bad word to say about him."

Dalton said there was some speculation that Roderick might retire, but there was never an official announcement until Tuesday.

"He's been very good to the people of Green County," Dalton said.

Roderick has been employed with the Green County Sheriff's Department since 1974.

While at the sheriff's department he was a dispatcher/jailer, patrol deputy, juvenile investigator, detective, chief detective and sheriff.

From 1972 to 1974 he was a police officer at the New Glarus Police Department.
