MONROE — The Green County Fairgrounds plans to go about its usual business for the summer schedule. That includes a full fair from July 21-25, the Green County Pickers Antique and Flea Market in early June and September, tractor pulls and other events.
That is, as long as the city is on board.
“We put in for a special event,” said Amanda Swedlund, office manager for fairgrounds, referring to the fair, “as long as the city approves.”
The fairgrounds had a rollercoaster offseason. During a snowstorm in the winter, the roof of one of the storage barns collapsed, covering the various campers and RVs inside with snow and debris. Swedlund said a liability waiver is signed before those spaces are rented for storage, but that he county still received some insurance money for cleanup of the mess and the future rebuild. The plan is to complete the new structure before the July fair. However, there are some out-of-pocket dollars the fairgrounds will have to pay out in the process.
A blessing for the organization and the site, however, comes from the Alice and Forrest Ladwig estate, which left an undisclosed amount of money to be used at the fairgrounds, which Swedlund said would be used as needed.
“It will definitely be used to help maintain the fairgrounds or directly for the fair,” Swedlund said.
