MONROE — Green County detectives arrested an Illinois woman Thursday after investigating the theft of thousands of dollars from a local elderly woman.

Genny Pellegrino, 35, Durand, was confronted by officers from the Green County Sheriff’s Office Thursday outside of a store in Monroe, Sheriff Mark Rohloff said.

Rohloff said a resident of rural Brodhead, a 71-year-old widow, reported possible theft to the department July 12. Investigators found that from April to June, there were “a number of transactions,” the majority local, made on the victim’s credit card, Rohloff said.

The charges totaled more than $4,100.

Detectives were able to find time-stamped video evidence to determine Pellegrino was the person who had used the credit card without the owner’s consent. The elderly woman identified Pellegrino through the images. Pellegrino had been a home health care worker for the woman for roughly three months.

Rohloff said Pellegrino has been “fully cooperative” in her arrest.

On Monday, Pellegrino appeared via video from the Green county Jail to attend an initial hearing with her public defender Guy Mason Taylor. She was charged with 23 Class H felony counts of misappropriating identity information to obtain money and one felony count of theft.

Green County Court Judge Thomas Vale set a $5,000 signature bond for Pellegrino after informing her of the charges on Monday. Pellegrino signed bond Tuesday. She has a preliminary hearing Sept. 7.
